Llangollen Railway

Llangollen Railway brings back many happy memories for me, from childhood summer holidays  when I remember dragging  mum & dad down to the platform to see the old saddle tank “Burtonwood Brewer” in the mid 80′s when there was only a mile of track…….To the mid 90′s when I became a volunteer and helped restore Carrog Station and helped with the restoration of the Large Prairie 5199  with Quentin Mcguinness.

Now as a dad I’m bringing my children back for rides to enjoy 7.5miles of the beautiful Dee valley. What the railway has achieved is superb over the last 20-25 years. It really does make for a terrific journey with the current northern terminus, Carrog the jewel in the crown. My first charter on the railway was a Don Bishop event with the Black Dukedog in March2009. I hope there’s many more to come so I can fully exploit the many locations along this fabulous railway.

Llangollen Railway 5-6thSept 2009

A family & friends camping weekend @ Carrog campsite allowed for a couple of short stints inbetween playing with the kids and drinking beer in the Grouse Inn @ Carrog. locos running were Black 5 44806, Pannier 6430 & Taffy Tank 5643... i always enjoy visiting this railway, i always bump into volunteers who i worked with when i was helping restore Carrog station. I leave wishing i could spend more time there........

Llangollen Black Dukedog Charter 30thMarch2009

A Don Bishop charter with the sole surviving GWR Dukedog 9017 painted into 1950's BR black had been a highly anticipated event for 2009. There were 2 charters organised for 30th & 31st March, with Freight & coaches. I chose the Coaching stock to recreate a classic late 50's Cambrian express with 1 maroon & 3 blood - custards Mk1's.it was a highly enjoyable day and well organised as you'd expect with Don. The weather forecast was overcast with the chance of sunny spells in the afternoon. In reality the best of the day was around noon where we had good spells of hazy sun at Garth-y-dwr. The afternoon saw the clouds increase in thickness and we called it a day @ Carrog by 18:00. Overall I got a good range of shots but would have liked another hour of sun.
