Mid Hants Railway

The Mid Hants Railway is a Southern Railway gem. Its 10miles stretch across lovely rolling hills and countryside between Alresford & Alton. The railway may also be referred to as the “Watercress line”due to the area around Alresford being renowned for its cultivation. Its location being close to Winchester, Southampton & Portsmouth makes it a very popular attraction for holidaymakers and day trippers alike. It has 4 attractive (well tended) stations often covered in flowers and the topiary hedges at Ropley add extra interest. The motive power depot (located at Ropley) can be accessed if there’s no shunting, this allows the visitor to wander amongst the locos and get close to the action. From a lineside perspective there’s only a handful of areas where photos can be taken, which is a shame really. Motive power as expected is formed from a stellar cast of SR locos, with some BR std designs, with the Mid Hants having a direct link to the Big railway @ Alton mainline visitors are a regular sight, ex LNER A4 60019 Bittern being a famous foreign loco recently. If you find yourself down in Hampshire go and pay these guys a visit……Its a lovely place and the volunteers Ive met were very friendly.

Around Ropley Engine shed 23rdMay2010.

A spare couple of hours before an afternoon photting Owls in Cheriton allowed a short wander around Ropley engine shed & station with my good friend Andy Gamble. I normally avoid trians in the Summer i hate the light and the lack of exhaust effect, but theres always a shot to be had! The best shots i felt were the arty abstract shots. See if you agree??
